From our correspondent

LAHORE: Universities are supposed to create knowledge and come up with cost effective innovations to find solution to our problems. Sale and purchase of Thesis and Dissertations is worse than organ trade and this menace needs to be checked. This was stated by Prof. Javed Akram Vice Chancellor of University of Health Sciences. He was speaking at the certificate distribution ceremony of Certificate of Medical Editing for CME Batch-3 candidates and induction of CME Batch-4 and Certificate in Medical Journalism for Editors (CMJE Batch-I) at UHS on February 16th 2022. These two courses, it may be mentioned here are being run and managed with the collaboration of Pakistan Association of Medical Editors (PAME). Prof. Maroof Aziz Pro VC UHS, Prof. M. Akbar Chaudhry an examiner for CME and Prof. Jamshed Akhtar President of PAME were also present on this occasion. Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid Chief Editor of Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences and Secretary of Eastern Mediterranean Association of Medical Editors(EMAME) is the course advisor.

Prof. Javed Akram

Continuing Prof. Javed Akram said that all the innovations must be locally tested. The universities are also known by the number of quality publications through research by the faculty members. However, unfortunately, many a times, some faculty members in some universities and other institutions as well as postgraduates indulge in unethical practices of sale and purchase of Thesis and Dissertations. Some unscrupulous elements are involved in this trade and one can buy these documents in any discipline and specialty. We need to create critical thinking among our researchers and make sure that this research is eventually commercialized leading to generation of resources for which the universities and academia has to collaborate and cooperate with the industry. It is a pity that our universities have failed in this regard. We must empower the faculty members and researches and teach them how to communicate their research findings. The researchers must sell their vision and align it with our national requirements. He further suggested that every medical institution must have a programme whereby the subject of Medical Writing and Medical Editing is taught to the postgraduates and faculty members. We should not promote quackery. Responding to the points raised by Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid regarding evaluation and recognition of journals, incompetence and inefficiency of our regularly bodies with the result that our researchers and faculty members are suffering for no fault of their own, Prof. Javed Akram said that this was a very serious and important issue. Instead of encouraging our researchers and promoting research culture we are discouraging them. He announced that UHS has taken the initiative and formed a Journals Evaluation and Recognition Committee and we will start working with immediate effect. The first meeting of this committee has been called today in the evening. All those nominated in the committee are former members of the defunct PM&DC Journals Committee and they have been given the task of looking at this issue in the light of the previous meetings of PM&DC Journals Committee and present their recommendations.

Prof. Javed Akram VC UHS, Prof. Maroof Aziz Pro VC UHS and Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid Advisor for CME speaking at
the induction ceremony of the new batches of CME Batch-4 and CMJE Batch-1 held at UHS on February 16, 2022.

Prof. Maroof Aziz Pro Vice Chancellor in his address on this occasion highlighted the importance of medical writing which he opined was as difficult as speaking in public. The authors need to convey their message in a way that it is easily understood. Whatever is written is a record which is going to last for some time and this is also going to be cited. Hence one has to be conscious while writing. He also referred to humanity in research and said that one should know what one is doing. He hoped that more and more journals from Pakistan will get an Impact Factor in the days to come. The researchers, faculty members who have spent years in their professional career are all very intelligent people and cream of our society. They must document their experiences; publish their research which will give them recognition.

Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid Advisor for Certificate in Medical Editing (CME) and Certificate in Medical Journalism for Editors (CMEJ) in his introductory remarks thanked Prof. Javed Akram Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maroof Aziz, Pro VC, Dr. Asad Registrar UHS, Prof. Nadia Naseem and her team for their untiring efforts to make this programme a success. During this journey there have been times when I was too much frustrated and depressed but eventually managed to convince everyone and we are able to start the Module two as well which has been named as Certificate in Medical Journalism for Editors (CMJE). All the candidates in both the courses are selected in a transparent manner on merit. Efforts are also made to ensure that all the different regions of the country are represented as this was the only such a structured course in the country. A four days internship in the offices of Impact factor Journals is an integral part for the CMJE course for which necessary arrangements are being made. In order to encourage the candidates, all the position holders are given special prizes which are all named after our pioneers in the field of medical journalism like late Dr. Sarwar J. Zuberi Chief Editor of JPMA, late Prof. Tahir Saeed Haroon Chief Editor of Pakistan Journal of Dermatology and former President of PMJA later renamed as PAME and late founder Chief Editor of Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences Dr. Maqbool H. Jafary. It also provides us an opportunity to appreciate, recognize the contributions made by our benefactors. Selected candidates from less developed areas also offered special prizes. Some of these prizes are sponsored by Atco Laboratories friends of PAME and some by Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences.

We have a very transparent evaluation and examination system wherein each and every candidate is evaluated by at least eight to nine persons before they get this Certificate in Medical Editing. He also referred to the incompetence and inefficiency of the regulatory bodies like deceased PM&DC, Pakistan Medical Commission and Higher Education Commission with the result that many researchers, faculty members as well as journals were suffering. He requested the VC UHS to take an initiative and find a solution.
